During this unit, students were faced with the challenge of keeping an egg safe by designing a restraint system using a vehicle they constructed using VEX IQ kits. We learned a lot about potential energy, kinetic energy, and what happens to energy during collisions. Then students worked with a small group to design a restraint system to absorb energy during a collision. They could only use the VEX IQ vehicle, VEX pieces, cotton balls, bubble wrap, rubber bands, pipe cleaners, cups, and tape. We only had one and a half class periods to build our designs, so thinking about and utilizing time was very important! To test our designs, we rolled the vehicle down an inclined plane and checked our egg. Finally, students explained their design and how it worked or did not work...using evidence!
